“When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man’s concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.” – JFK, Remarks at Amherst College, October 26, 1963.
I’m kind taken with this project, though I admit I try not to listen to the words as much as the music of the words when listening. Besides leading me to these remarks by JFK, this new music lead me to Auden’s, “In Memory of W. B. Yeats,” and these last stanzas:
Follow, poet, follow right
To the bottom of the night,
With your unconstraining voice
Still persuade us to rejoice;
With the farming of a verse
Make a vineyard of the curse,
Sing of human unsuccess
In a rapture of distress;
In the deserts of the heart
Let the healing fountain start,
In the prison of his days
Teach the free man how to praise.
